Optimus is sorry to say naive, he has a very special relationship with Elita that Magnus isn't a part of. She'd do anything for him, i.e sacrificing her life energy to activate a time power to safe him from acid. 

A few fanfic I've read depict Elita as Optimus' medicine from leader pains. He can be himself around her without having to guarded and secretive emotionally like he is as with the Autobots. I agree with this idea.
